What are the best things about attending Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine?
I have had an overwhelmingly positive experience at SIU SDM. I think the best thing about the program is how early we get hands-on experience. We had preclinical courses our first semester, so we were introduced to our handpieces and waxing instruments right away. I have heard that some schools don’t start any lab classes until their second semester, and I think it was very beneficial to get some practical experience under our belts from the beginning (also, let's face it, most of us didn’t decide to come to dental school to learn about the Krebs cycle for the eighth time, even though you will). With that said, we start seeing our own patients in clinic around the same time as most other dental schools: summer after second year.

What are the worst things about attending Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine?
There aren't many negative things to say about SIU. The worst part about the school is probably the location. Upper Alton can be a little sketchy sometimes, but I have never experienced any problems. However, I do feel the campus itself is safe. There are numerous emergency help beacons located around the small campus, all of the buildings require a student/staff ID to swipe in, and there is a campus police officer on the grounds 24/7. Basically, as long as you don’t wander off campus in the middle of the night, it’s all good.

What do students need to know/What do you wish you knew before attending Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine?
Out-of-state students should definitely be aware that although SIU will still consider OOS applicants, they almost never admit OOS students. Another important factor is that it requires at least 6 months of living in IL with gainful income (or education) at the moment of application to ensure that you can apply as a resident (can’t move to the state right before applying and have IS status). For example, if you just moved over the summer, it is too late for this cycle, and you’d essentially need to wait a year to apply as an IS applicant.

About school of dentistry
Southern Illinois University (SIU), a state-supported institution, established the School of Dental Medicine (SDM) in 1969. The dental school is located on the campus of the former Shurtleff College in Alton, 15 miles from the Edwardsville campus. Situated within the metropolitan St. Louis area, SIU-SDM offers the social and cultural attractions of an urban environment while it identifies with predominantly rural southern Illinois. This unique circumstance enables SDM students to apply their knowledge and skills in the treatment of the broadest spectrum of oral health care needs.
