"Professors are very accommodating in our didactic coursework. They are willing to work with each class to schedule exams in coordination with other courses, so as to avoid having too many exams back to back."
"Overall, students at SIU are less stressed than students at most other schools."
"Out-of-state students should definitely be aware that although SIU will still consider OOS applicants, they almost never admit OOS students."

What are the best things about attending Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine?

I have had an overwhelmingly positive experience at SIU SDM. I think the best thing about the program is how early we get hands-on experience. We had preclinical courses our first semester, so we were introduced to our handpieces and waxing instruments right away. I have heard that some schools don’t start any lab classes until their second semester, and I think it was very beneficial to get some practical experience under our belts from the beginning (also, let's face it, most of us didn’t decide to come to dental school to learn about the Krebs cycle for the eighth time, even though you will). With that said, we start seeing our own patients in clinic around the same time as most other dental schools: summer after second year.
