What are the best things about attending OHSU School of dentistry?
There are a lot of things to love about OHSU. First off, the facilities are amazing. The new school was built about five years ago and it is much nicer than any of the dental schools that I have seen in person. Not only is it new, it is very modern and clean. The school is 12 floors with the sim lab on the 10th floor which makes for great views of downtown Portland, the Willamette river, and the South Waterfront. Many dental schools have their sim labs in basements that felt like dungeons. All the nice views make it a little easier to be stuck inside during school. The dental clinics are on the 8th and 9th floors which also makes for great views. Specialty clinics are on the 11th and 12th floors.

What are the worst things about attending OHSU School of Dentistry?
OHSU just hired a new Dean of Academic Affairs and he has been very strict as far as attendance and other matters go. To the point where I forgot to sign the role one day and didn’t find out until the end of the term that I failed the class because of this. It was a headache and took weeks for me to clear up and finally get my grade changed. There have been a few issues like this for other students in other classes too (see additional experiences discussed below). The school seriously lacks diversity. if you are a minoritized student, this program can feel very isolating. The program doesn’t make a serious attempt to diversify incoming classes. For example, between 2011-2018, OHSU only admitted one student identifying as Black or African American (in 2016) out of 157 applicants.

What do students need to know/what do you wish you knew before attending OHSU School of Dentistry?
Students from prominent, majority social and ethnic backgrounds seem to enjoy OHSU for the most part, though they have their gripes (see those listed above that are not related to ethnic/social issues). If you are an underrepresented minority, I highly recommend going to ADEA online (https://www.adea.org/data/students/) to view statistics on each school regarding the number of underrepresented students that apply and the number that get admitted.
