What are the best things about attending University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry?
The best part about UMKC dental school is the renovated pre-clinical laboratory and the early exposure to clinic. UMKC recently invested millions of dollars in their new pre-clinical laboratory. With the new upgrades, UMKC’s goal is to simulate the most realistic clinical experience so that their students can feel prepared and confident practicing in a dental clinic after graduation. Another reason for the updates was to increase student productivity. For example, every laboratory bench is equipped with a monitor so that students can view demonstrations without any obstructions from the comfort of their own laboratory bench. Additionally, the new pre-clinical laboratory provides a safer working and learning environment. Unlike the previous laboratory, the new pre-clinical laboratory provides vacuum suctioning for trimming casts and other projects at every bench.

What are the worst things about attending University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry?
My least favorite part about UMKC is the wait time for faculty members. In the pre-clinical laboratory, the faculty to student ratio is approximately 1: 10. Most of our instructors for the pre-clinical laboratory are also instructors for the clinic. This means that the instructors will understandably give priority to the third- and fourth-year students, as they are seeing real patients. But sometimes in preclinic you feel “blown off” or less important simply because you are a first-year student.

What do students need to know/what do you wish you knew before attending University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry?
Before choosing UMKC, I would just remember that we are a pretty traditional school. Our curriculum is class-based rather than module-based. We use the standard (A, B, C, D, F) plus/minus grading, as well as a ranking system. We are not a pass/fail school. So, if you are trying to apply for a residency, your chances will be better if you are near the top of your class.
