What are the best things about attending University of Michigan School of Dentistry?
One of the best things about attending the University of Michigan School of Dentistry is the abundance of opportunity at our school. One example of this that we have nearly all of the dental specialties represented at the school, which makes it easier to narrow down interests and gain insight into applying for residency programs. Another example is the 5-year DDS-MBA program offered here. No matter what you want your future to look like, you can make it happen at Michigan.

What are the worst things about attending University of Michigan School of Dentistry?
One of my least favorite aspects about attending Michigan is that we essentially go to school year-round. This makes it easy to get burnt out and can be frustrating when you see other dental students getting time off. That being said, our academic load does lighten up significantly in the summer. The mandatory attendance policy. All the courses are recorded and most lecturers just read the slides, however attendance is required (but not always enforced). The school is also under renovation until 2024-2025. This will have a massive impact on anyone attending dental school until the renovation is finished.

What do students need to know/what do you wish you knew before attending University of Michigan School of Dentistry?
Some ranking systems have given UM a high ranking over the years. It can be easy to interpret that ranking with an incredible dental school experience. To students thinking about attending UM, I would say take that with a grain of salt. Attending UM will prepare you and expose you to dentistry but it can also be an incredibly frustrating experience being in a system that works towards its own reputation at the expense of its students. For example, the school implemented a required “pathways” system that essentially puts more busy work on students. The initial idea was to get all students to do research, but it simply became an extra hoop to jump through involving additional coursework and/or research projects.
