What are the best things about attending UCSF School of Dentistry?
The pass/no pass system is one of the best things about this school. It helps eliminate competition between classmates, and everyone is willing to help each other out. Students don’t have to worry about receiving incorrect information from other students or people holding out on study resources because everyone will receive the same grade in the end. The school does offer ‘commendations’ and ways for students to show that they have excelled in certain fields of dentistry. However, we aren’t sure if these actually help for specializing as residency programs don’t really know what they are, or what was required to get one. The P/F system still creates a very relaxed environment and enables opportunities for other things like research, and other social life.

What are the worst things about attending UCSF Dental School?
The faculty/student ratio in the sim lab could be better. We have about 1 faculty per 16 students. There’s often a long wait before you can get help from faculty members. To offset this, they try to have upperclassmen in the sim lab to give tips on certain preps and restorations. It would be better if this ratio were closer to 1:8, but it’s unlikely UCSF is going to hire a bunch of new faculty.

What do students need to know/what do you wish you knew before attending UCSF Dental School?
Overall, I really like UCSF School of Dentistry. Dental school is already difficult with the amount of information that everyone has to go through. This school tries its best to make sure that we have a good work/life balance. There are many socials that are lined up after our exams to help us destress, and the culture here is extremely supportive.
