What are the best things about attending West Virginia University School of Dentistry?
One of the biggest advantages of attending WVU is its well-known reputation for creating good clinicians. Our graduation requirements for clinical cases are higher in comparison to other schools, which allows students to get tons of experience with treating all types of cases: caries, perio, extractions, and fixed/removable prosthodontics. We also go on a 6-week rural rotation during our 4th year which allows us to work in a private practice doing procedures and gaining even more experience. Our 3rd year students also have an opportunity to travel to Guatemala to treat patients which provides an excellent clinical (and life) experience.

What are the worst things about attending West Virginia University School of Dentistry?
While raising graduation requirements and getting tons of clinical experience is definitely a good thing, it makes it difficult for students to find enough patients to meet those requirements. The community of Morgantown just isn’t big enough to keep a steady flow of patients for every single student, so students often have to bring in friends/family members as their own patients. This is especially difficult for out-of-state students who don’t have family members close by. In particular, there is definitely a shortage of patients that need endo treatment. The few endodontic patients that come into clinic end up being seen by the endo residents, so D3 and D4 students have very little experience with endo.

What do students need to know/what do you wish you knew before attending West Virginia University School of Dentistry?
I mostly just wish I understood more about how classes and clinic were structured so I knew more of what to expect for each year. All of our basic bscience classes are taken in D1 and D2 years. We are eased into practicing hand skills by starting wax ups in dental anatomy during the first semester of D1. By second semester, we take our first “real” dental class and get to start drilling. D2 is more of a loaded schedule with a mixture of dental and basic science classes. We spend a lot of time in lab with fixed and removable pros classes, composite, and a cast gold restorations class.

About school of dentistry
The West Virginia University School of Dentistry (WVU SOD) offers Doctor of Dental Surgery, Bachelor of Science, and Master of Science in Dental Hygiene, as well as advanced education programs in Endodontics, Orthodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The small class size allows students to have more personalized faculty interactions. WVU SOD was one of three schools in the United States and Canada initially selected to establish a Center for Research and Education in Technology (CRET) Innovation Center. The Dr. W. Robert Biddington Center for Dental Innovation is a progressive, 2,239 square foot learning environment. The CRETs five operatories feature newly developed, high-tech equipment. The School of Dentistry is located in the WVU Health Sciences Center and is one of five schools focused on the education and training of health care professionals. This comprehensive learning environment allows students to experience interprofessional learning with the schools of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and public health.
