What are the best things about attending the UCLA School of Dentistry?
The best thing about attending UCLA School of Dentistry is the Honors/Pass/Fail grading system. Being in dental school is very stressful. The classes and volume of material will be much harder than your undergraduate courses, so knowing that you only need to get a 70-75% in each class to pass is a huge relief. That being said, there is the option to earn “Honors” in a course. An “Honors” grade is awarded to the top 10- 15% of scores in the class (usually 8-12 students). This is nice because you can choose a few classes each quarter that you want to try to get “Honors” in and just focus on passing the others. For example, if you know you want to specialize in a certain field after dental school, you can work hard in classes that pertain to that specialty and set yourself apart by getting “Honors” in those classes.

What are the worst things about attending the UCLA School of Dentistry?
Along with a strong, prestigious reputation comes a difficult course load. Our classes are generally very challenging, and the faculty expect a lot from us. Some classes are easier than others, but there seem to be at least 2-4 each quarter that are extremely demanding. Part of this comes from the more systemic health courses we take where we spend a lot of time learning medical information about the entire body, and some of it comes from our dental laboratory classes.

What do students need to know/What do you wish you knew before attending the UCLA School of Dentistry?
If you want to be a general dentist, this might not be the best program for you. You will need to have a residency (GPR, AEGD) after dental school because UCLA focuses so much on didactics. You have knowledge but not the clinical exposure.
