What are the best things about attending Howard University College of Dentistry?
In case you are not aware, Howard is a Historically Black College/University (HBCU) with a published mission to “provide a dental education of exceptional quality to qualified individuals, with particular emphasis on recruiting promising African Americans and other historically underrepresented students." They also emphasize interviewing and accepting students whose applications and lives show a predisposition to serving marginalized groups and communities.

What are the worst things about attending Howard University College of Dentistry?
You’re going to basically teach yourself, especially in the didactic portions of the dental curriculum. Learning course content usually involves reading information off the slides directly and memorizing it. The lecturers aren’t the greatest, and you will also get tired of sitting in class so you end up using YouTube to understand it better. The lecturers in the dental courses can also be pretty unforgiving and harsh. Attendance is mandatory and if class attendance starts to drop, the professors notice and make the exams harder. This is frustrating as many other schools simply record their lectures so students can catch up afterward.

What do students need to know/what do you wish you knew before attending Howard University College of Dentistry?
You’re going to work your butt off. It’s not easy, especially here. You may go through a time where you experience depression and great anxiety. First-year is hell: you’re juggling everything and then suddenly you have 300 new things to juggle with the old things. Second-year isn’t as bad as the first but it’s still pretty terrible. Third-year is smoother sailing as the only big hurdles are finding patients, dealing with administration, and Axium. Fourth-year, you basically have it down but you’re preparing for residency and getting your clinical requirements done.
